Two Swords are Enough

Many scholars are perplexed by Luke 22:38.  Here is that Bible verse in context:

Luk 22:35  And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. 
Luk 22:36  Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 
Luk 22:37  For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. 
Luk 22:38  And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough. 

I have never met anyone that knew the meaning and couldn’t find what I felt was a valid explanation for the verse.  I consulted several commentaries and found an interesting comment in Adam Clarke’s commentary:

“I must here confess that the matter about the swords appear to me very obscure. I am afraid I do not understand it, and I know of none who does.”

I’m going to explain why the Two Swords are Enough as I believe the Holy Spirit has revealed to me.

Even though Jesus spoke of earthly things, He was really revealing Spiritual  Knowledge (Joh 3:12).  The verses here in Luke are likewise a revelation of Spiritual Knowledge and are therefore discerned by those with the Spirit.

I believe the reasons the verses are difficult are that we have Jesus Christ who has told us to love our enemies and turn the cheek to now take up a Sword.  But what is further confusing to most readers, as it was myself, was that the audience is comprised of more than two people since that audience is Jesus’ disciples.  Therefore, two swords would seem very inefficient for protection or defense for the number of these disciples.  What further adds to that difficulty is that we find one of the disciples being rebuked by Jesus when he uses a sword against the High Priest’s servant that had come to the apprehension of Jesus:

Mat 26:51  And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest’s, and smote off his ear. 
Mat 26:52  Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. 
Mat 26:53  Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? 
Mat 26:54  But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?

Therefore we can see that Luke 22:38 leaves many readers with much confusion.  But let’s think Spiritually.  Do we have a Spiritual Description of what could be meant by the Sword?  The answer can be found in

Eph_6:17  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Notice that we let the Bible translate the meaning.

Notice other references to a Sword:

Rev_19:15  And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

So we have the Sword in a Spiritual context referring to the Word of God.

Could Jesus be referring to the Word of God as being Enough?  While it seems very possible that Jesus is referring to the Word of God we need to also investigate how TWO SWORDS would be ENOUGH.

So if the Word of God relates to the sword reference in Luke 22:38, then we should understand that two swords would refer to Two of the Word of God.  Now we know the disciples spoken to were the beloved Apostles.  Those that have the Word of God have the Testimony of Jesus Christ.

Joh 15:27  And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning. 

Witness is another word for Testimony.  Inside the Ark of the Covenant was the 10 Commandments which was in two tables of stone.  These Commandments were referred to as the Testimony:

Exo_31:18  And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

So God by His Word being engraved in the stones that were given to Moses in Two Tables of Testimony provide a former type here.

2Co_3:3  Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

The verse above is a key verse in our understanding and linking the former type.  We can see that the above is the Spirit of living God is written in fleshy tables of the heart.  This means the heart of men shall possess the Testimony of God via the Spirit.  The Spirit of God is also found in the Word of God:

Joh_6:63  It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Now Jesus dispatches His Apostles by twos:

Mar_6:7  And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;

So we have found links between men having the Word of God (The very Testimony of Jesus Christ) being sent out by Twos as dispatched by Jesus.

Now let’s tie this together:

Deu_17:6  At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.

Notice above that while 3 witnesses and for that matter more could be found to put someone to death, TWO were ENOUGH.

So what we have found is that Jesus has dispatched His Apostles by TWOs to put others to death by the SWORD which is the Word of God.

Now what does that mean that they would be putting others to death by the Sword?  It means that those to whom would believe the message (Word of God) preached by those Apostles, they would therefore die Spiritually.  In other words, they would cease to be themselves and now manifest a new identify and emulate Christ.  This is really what salvation is – emulating the Son of God.  So those that believe are spiritually beheaded and live anew in Christ Jesus.

When was the Crucifixion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ?

In this article we will investigate the factors that contribute to dating the Crucifixion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This article will show that Jesus was crucified on a Wednesday April 25th, 31 AD and died around 6pm that evening and then rose from the dead on Sunday April 29th.

Background Information

Jesus gave a sign to the Pharisees who pressed upon Him as detailed in the following verse:

Mat 12:40  For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 

Some have speculated that the sign could simply refer to three periods of day and three periods of night and that it didn’t have to be consecutive complete periods of day and night.  Consider that this sign is being given to those evil Pharisees, does anyone believe that Jonah would only be in the belly of the great fish for 3 incomplete periods of night and day? Would anyone believe that the fish cast out Jonah and then swallowed him again and again over and over, especially given that this is a sign? Many of these opponents to 3 complete days and nights in the heart of the earth are those that have failed to resolve a solution to the scriptures.  That resolution is detailed in this article.

It is important to mention that the Jewish Calendar would start a month at the first sliver of moonlight following a new moon.

The Jewish Calendar is starting days at sunset (a period I compare to when the sun is no longer claiming the land by casting a shadow).  The day continues  through night into the day-light hours to then end at the same period of sunset.  We often see this period of sunset referred to in the Bible as “between the evenings”.

The Bible tells us there are 12 hours in a day:

Joh_11:9  Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

These twelve hours are not variable in length depending on the time of the year but are fixed periods.  However, there was not twelve hours of the day during the day of the Crucifixion. Only the peak months of summer would have 12 hours of daylight.  During the Crucifixion, there would be around 9 hours of daylight.  So to consider this in a manner for comprehension it is best to think of an hour as consisting of around 80 minutes for calculation purposes.

The Sign of Jonah breakdown

Sunday April 22nd (Nisan 10) – Chief Priests of the Temple decide to kill Jesus.  Jesus proclaims at this time that after two days He will be crucified.

Mat 26:1  And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples, 
Mat 26:2  Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.

NOTE: In the verse above (Mat 26:2), Jesus says AFTER two days that He would be crucified.  Since He states this on Nisan 10, then AFTER two days would be Nisan 13.  So we know at this point He is going to be crucified on Nisan 13.

Exo 12:3  Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, On the tenth of this month let them take each man a lamb according to the houses of their families, every man a lamb for his household. 

Mat 26:3  Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 
Mat 26:4  And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. 

Tuesday April 24th (Nisan 13) the evening after the “Last Supper”, Jesus is apprehended in the Garden of Gethsemane and suffers through interrogation by the Temple Priests.

Wednesday April 25th (Nisan 13 ) – This is Preparation Day for the Passover.  Jesus is brought to Pilate in the morning and he orders Jesus to be crucified upon further petition by the Jews.  Jesus is crucified at the 3rd hour (approx. 10 am.)  There is a darkness that comes on the land at the 6th hour (approx. 2 pm) and lasts until about the time Jesus dies which is the 9th hour (approx. 6 pm.)

Wednesday April 25 (Nisan 14 & Passover starts – at sunset) – Jesus dies on the cross at the 9th hour (approx 6 pm).  There is a full moon consistent with being the 14th day of the month since the start of the month is based on a Lunar calendar.

Exo 12:6  Exo 12:6  ‘And it hath become a charge to you, until the fourteenth day of this month, and the whole assembly of the company of Israel have slaughtered it between the evenings; (YLT)

Exo 12:6  And it shall be kept by you till the fourteenth of this month, and all the multitude of the congregation of the children of Israel shall kill it toward evening. (Brenton)

NOTE: I have included Young’s Literal Translation and Brenton versions of the verse above.  The period when the Lamb is killed is often referred to as “between the evenings”.  This was covered in the Background Information section earlier in the article.

Wednesday April 25 (Nisan 14 – Passover – evening has come) – Jesus is entombed.  This night doesn’t count for Jonah’s sign (3 Days and 3 Nights) because Jesus was placed in the tomb during the night so it would not be a full night.

Deu 21:23  His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance. 

Mat 27:57  When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple: 
Mat 27:58  He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. 

NOTE: Some have claimed that the verse above (Deu 21:23) is evidence that He had to be entombed during the day period.  Let’s remember this verse exist for the very purpose of relating to the Messiah.  This verse was already foreshadowing that Jesus would be buried in the night and recall that the day did not start until sunset had arrived.  Therefore, in order for Jesus not to “remain all night upon the tree”, He would have to be entombed that night.

Thursday April 26 (Nisan 14 – Day time)(Jonah Sign – DAY 1/3 NIGHT 0/3) On this Day the Temple Priests request from Pilate to have the tomb sealed and have the tomb guarded.

Thursday April 26 (Nisan 15 – Night time)(Jonah Sign – DAY 1/3 NIGHT 1/3) 

Friday April 27 (Nisan 15 – Day time)  – (Jonah Sign – DAY 2/3 NIGHT 1/3)  Preparation Day for weekly Sabbath.

Friday April 27 (Nisan 16 – Night time)(Jonah Sign – DAY 2/3 NIGHT 2/3) Weekly Sabbath Day.

Saturday April 28 (Nisan 16 – Day time) (Jonah Sign – DAY 3/3 NIGHT 2/3) Weekly Sabbath day.

Saturday April 28 (Nisan 17 – Night time)(Jonah Sign – DAY 3/3 NIGHT 3 /3) Third night of Jonah’s sign until Sunday morning daybreak.

Sunday April 29 (Nisan 17 – early morning) – Jesus is Resurrected at day break completing Jonah’s sign of 3 days and 3 nights.  This day is also known as the Feast of FirstFruits.

Signs in the Heavens

During this period of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, there are significant astronomical events taking place.

The planets of Venus, Mars, and Saturn had entered into Gemini while Jupiter had entered into Taurus. The significance of this is that the heavens  are raising an emphasis by putting this much illumination to this particular constellation.  Research has not yet yielded significant information about the meaning of the planets but regarding the constellation of Gemini, ancient cultures applied to it the meaning of a “union” or “marriage”.  There was an account of Gemini as representing Adam and Eve.  This “union” or “marriage” is a direct fit for this period of time since the Passover event is when Jesus is having His “Last Supper” with His disciples which signifies a union with Him.  Interesting to also note is that Jupiter is in Taurus which is often been giving the meaning of “resurrection” in ancient cultures while Jupiter represented the “King”.

While the confidence of correctly reading these astronomical events is lacking, they are presented because some historical interpretation was correlated.   However, there is an event that we do know took place on the evening of April 25th, 31 AD, and that was a Lunar Eclipse visible in the evening sky.  We know this event took place on that evening because even NASA has archived the eclipse:

But now we have to ask where was there a Lunar Eclipse recorded as being associated with this event.  We find that recorded in the book of Acts:

Act 2:20  The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: 

Now to set that context, the day is Pentecost and Peter is rebuking the crowd about how they saw the moon turn to blood and the sun turned into darkness which is a prophecy from Joel 2:31 and directly relates this event to Jesus.  Now when the sun did turn to darkness, this must have been an extraordinary event as compared to a typical solar eclipse because the darkness was upon the land for around 2 pm until the time Jesus died – around 6 pm.  (Luk_23:44).  If there is a full moon, you cannot also have a solar eclipse.

A blood moon is what is referred to a moon that  turns the color of red (blood) and is the result of how the light passes from the earth’s atmosphere.

Length of Jesus Ministry before the  Crucifixion

The Length of time that Jesus performed His ministry before the Crucifixion is important from a dating perspective because we know that He was 30 years old when He was baptized and that Tiberius Caesar was in his 15th year of rule as the following verse shows:

Luk 3:1  Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, 

From chronological events we can conclude that Jesus’ ministry was for 3.5 years.  Tiberius was Roman Emperor from 14 AD to 37 AD.  So if it was the 15th year of his reign that would mean (14 + 15 = 29 AD) or at the ealiest 28 AD.  So that would mean that the dating of 31 AD would not fit the time that Tiberius ruled and correlate to the 3.5 years of Jesus’ ministry.  However, Tiberius actually began to reign two years earlier.  The verse in Luk 3:1 doesn’t say when Tiberius was Emperor but rather the 15th year of his reign.  According to Suetonius, these ceremonies and the declaration of his “co-princeps” took place in the year 12 AD.
Therefore if Tiberius was “co-princeps” in 12 AD then the 15th year of his reign would be 26/27 AD.  Therefore, we are in alignment with the dating of the scriptures and His ministry of 3.5 years.

Now we have another dating event that we need to ensure we don’t contradict because if Jesus was 33 years old when He was crucified then that places His birth at 3 BC using our date of 31 AD for His death.  We know that Herod was ruling Judea at this time and upon hearing of the coming King had dispatched the orders to kill the children two years and younger when the Magi (wise men) didn’t come and report back to him the location of Jesus. We see that in the following verse:

Mat 2:16  Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. 

But according to many historical accounts King Herod is said to have died in 4 BC.  Now if that is the case, then our record of Jesus being born in 3 BC and being Crucified in 31 AD at at 33 could not have happened since Herod ruled Judea after Jesus had been born.  Now if Herod died in 4 BC then since he commanded the children of 2 years and younger to be killed then this would have indicated that Jesus was born in 6 BC or earlier and would put Jesus at least 36 years old when He died since we can already conclude when Tiberius’ 15th year was.  We know His ministry was not that long.  The only way anything fits is if Herod died in 1 BC.  There is a great deal of evidence, to lengthy for this article, to show that 1 BC is the year that Herod died.

Another evidence we need to look at is the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem which occurred in finality on 70 AD.  However, the destruction began on the day of Crucifixion when the Veil was rent:

Mat_27:51  And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

If we include 31 AD as the start of the Destruction then 31 AD plus 40 years would give us 70 AD (remember this math is including year 31 AD).

For those 40 years, Jewish history records that there were desolations taking place in regards to the Temple.  The year 40 is significant because this number is associated with events of Trial/Judgement such as when the Israelites were in the Wilderness after the Exodus and when Noah and his family underwent 40 days and nights of rain, or when Jesus Himself, after His baptism, withstood the Devil for 40 day and nights. The Jewish Temple was desolated for 40 years in showing us a “type” also of the 40 Jubilees that would follow of trial/judgement upon His Church. So the only year that would fit for accomplishing that 40 years of judgement upon the Temple in Jerusalem would be 31 AD since the destruction was also in year 70 AD.  That would complete the 40 year “type”.  Therefore, this is more weight to show that 31 AD was the year of the Crucifixion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Conclusion

Jesus was Crucified, Died, and Rose again from the dead on April 25th 31 AD.  The evidence shows that Jesus met the criteria of the Sign of Jonah which He gave to the Pharisees of being in the heart of the earth for 3 days and 3 nights.

Some people have asked why this information is even important to understand.  For the student of Truth, we obviously want to ensure the record is true.  But additionally, there are prophetic events still unfolding that are based on this date and the events that took place according to their timing.  For example, this date of April 25th is a Jubilee year.  This is significant in understanding key events ahead including the Lord’s Day.  Please refer to the article called The Last Jubilee on this site for more information on the Jubilee year.

Hopefully, this message has given edification and confidence to those who study God’s Word.

 

The Last Jubilee

To understand the significance of the Last Jubilee we must understand what a Jubilee is.  A Jubilee is a designation for a certain type of “year” as defined in the Bible.  Many students first come across the discussion of the Jubilee in Leviticus chapter 25.

Lev 25:8  And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years. 
Lev 25:9  Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land. 
Lev 25:10  And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. 

So to understand this properly, you count 49 years and then the following year will be a Jubilee year (the Fiftieth Year).  Now, the Fiftieth year is also the first year of the next cycle when counting the years unto the subsequent Jubilees.  So remember that the 50 year is 50/1 (meaning Fiftieth year and 1st year of next cycle).  On each Jubilee year, you will then wait till the seventh month (Hebrew Calendar) and on the 10th day of that month (which is also called the Day of Atonement) a Trumpet is sounded throughout the land.

The Jubilee is a time when those that are servants/slaves are allowed to be liberated.  And to all people in the land is that liberty given.  The Jubilee is a Holy Year and God brings blessings of the crops before the Jubilee year so that the increase of the previous years will be enough to feed the people during the Jubilee year since at that time you cannot sow the land.

There are additional details about the Jubilee you can read about in the subsequent verses of Leviticus chapter 25. But for this article, I have covered the necessary background information to understand the rest of this article.

There is evidence that the Jubilee was recognized before the time of the Israelites leaving Egypt.  There is a book that was discovered call the Book of Jubilees which gives historical accounts and chronologies of Biblical events based on the Jubilee even using them to date the births of Adam and Eve’s children.

But there is also a reference believed to be associated with Jubilees in the following verse of the Bible:

Gen 6:3  And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 

Some will argue that this verse is just a reference to the time when God would destroy the Earth by Flood.  It does appear that this time period would fit the order of events leading up to the flood.  However, even after the flood God has had His spirit striving with man.

So at this point we should stop and reflect on something called Bible Typology.  What this refers to is that there are earthly items and events that are “types” of what is Spiritual.  Consider for a moment a mirror.  The reflection that is in a mirror is not the actual person’s face but rather a representation of it.  God has presented  these earthly “types” to help us understand what is Spiritual.

Now that we hopefully understand Bible Typology, let’s continue on with how this relates to the verse in Genesis.  So while the timing seems to fit with the flood account we also have more evidence to correlate from the Book of Jasher (which is also mentioned in your Bible):

From Book of Jasher (Sepir Ha Yasher) – chapter 5:

6 And after the lapse of many years, in the four hundred and eightieth year of the life of Noah, when all those men, who followed the Lord had died away from amongst the sons of men, and only Methuselah was then left, God said unto Noah and Methuselah, saying,

7 Speak ye, and proclaim to the sons of men, saying, Thus saith the Lord, return from your evil ways and forsake your works, and the Lord will repent of the evil that he declared to do to you, so that it shall not come to pass.

8 For thus saith the Lord, Behold I give you a period of one hundred and twenty years; if you will turn to me and forsake your evil ways, then will I also turn away from the evil which I told you, and it shall not exist, saith the Lord.

So we can see that there is a reference here to support the association of the 120 years to the Great Flood of Noah’s day.  But since man continued to sin after the flood then we know that God’s Spirit is still striving with man.  We must look at a greater meaning to these 120 years.  Since we know there is an association with the Great Flood, and we look closer and understand that Noah and his family are experiencing a great liberation of their own from evil that existed in the world (at least the former world).  Therefore, the year of the Great Flood has a relationship to the Jubilee also.

There is no other form of year that can be associated to these 120 years other than the Jubilee year based on the Bible record.  We know it cannot simply refer to a calendar year because 120 years has truly come and gone and God’s Spirit is still striving with man.

So now that we can conclude these years are unfulfilled Jubilee years, we should now explain what we mean by the “Last” Jubilee.  Since we know there are 120 Jubilees based on Genesis 6:3 for which God Spirit will strive with man, then if know the LAST Jubilee, we can then know when the Lord’s Day will come (Coming again of Jesus Christ).

Now to find the Last Jubilee or any Jubilee for that matter we need to have a reference point. It seems that the Bible doesn’t record explicitly when some of these Jubilees were observed.  We do know when one of those events would be which is when the Israelites would dwell safely in the land after they crossed the Jordan into the Promised Land.  But we have another year which is more recent with many more clues and that year is the year that Jesus was Crucified, Died, and then Rose from the dead. That year was 31 AD. (April 25th 31 AD – another article will be posted regarding this date at a later time).  That was a Jubilee year when all those that were in Christ would receive Liberty that year. We know this because we can use the same understanding that we used to establish that the Great Flood occurred on a Jubilee year.

Based on chronological evidence and understanding of previous Jubilee events such as the Exodus and the Great Flood, the year of Jesus Crucifixion, Death and subsequent Resurrection would mark that year (31 AD) as the 80th Jubilee.  Since there are only 120 Jubilees, we can count the Jubilees from 31 AD.  Now since 31 AD is number 80 then (120 – 80 ) leaves us 40 Jubilees since 31 AD.  (120-80 = 40).  Now since we count subsequent Jubilees by 49 years that would give us (40 Jubilees * 49 = 1960 years).  Since we are counting from 31 AD we count from that year (1960 years + 31) = 1991.  Therefore the 120th Jubilee was 1991 AD.  There are only 120 Jubilees allotted for God’s Spirit to strive with man.  Those days are now coming to end.   We are currently in the last Jubilee “Period” before the Day of the Lord.

Prepare and watch, be ready for THAT Day is quickly approaching.

 

 

 

Can we know the Day and the Hour of when Jesus will return?

There are several verses in the Bible that many use as arguments against being able to know the Day and Hour of when Jesus will return.  We are going to analyze this topic and look closer at what the Bible says.

Let’s get straight to the verse most often quoted in this regard:

Mat 24:36  But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

The verb in the verse above is translated from the Greek.  Let’s look at that verb and its parsing – οιδενG1492 V-RAI-3S.  Notice the “R” in the parsing just after the “V”.  This R denotes a PERFECT tense.  In the Ancient Greek language a PERFECT Tense expresses something that has already happened and is continuing to happen.  Nothing in this verse indicates that someone CAN’T know the day or the hour.

Now let’s look at another verse:

Mat 24:42  Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

Again, we have the verb expressed in the Perfect Tense – οιδατεG1492 V-RAI-2P.  The people  that Jesus is talking to here  are His disciples which is set in context in the first verse of this chapter 24:

Mat 24:1  And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.

Let’s also address the time of Noah in the following verses:

Mat 24:37  But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Mat 24:38  For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
Mat 24:39  And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Did Noah actually know the very day the flood would come before it happened.  Yes, and your Bible indicates this in the following verse:

Gen 7:4  For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.

There are additional details that seem to indicate that he knew the year as well from the reference to the 120 years in Gen 6:3 as well as chapter 6 of the Book of Jasher

Now, lets continue on and notice verse 43:

Mat 24:43  But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.

Now let’s analyze that verse.  When would the goodman have watched for the thief? Answer – when he knew in which watch the thief would come.  Now let’s continue on with the next verse:

Mat 24:44  Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

In that verse we have the verb “think”.  Again, let’s turn to the Greek Parsing and see what it tells us about this verb – δοκειτεG1380 V-PAI-2P. The “P” just after the “V” indicates that this verb was stated in the Present tense.  Again, there is nothing in these verses to indicate that we could never  know the day or the hour of the return of Jesus Christ.

Now let’s look at the verses that end out the chapter:

Mat 24:45  Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
Mat 24:46  Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
Mat 24:47  Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
Mat 24:48  But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
Mat 24:49  And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
Mat 24:50  The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, 
Mat 24:51  And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Let’s consider verse 50 above.  This verse indicates that the Lord would come on a day and hour when the evil servant was NOT looking for Him.  Surely, this is contrasting that the righteous would be looking for Him in a certain day and hour.

Now consider that the disciples were instructed to stay awake and watch when Jesus went into the Garden of Gethsemane.  It should make one very curious to why would Jesus instruct them to be watching when Jesus already knew the time He would be taken into custody.  Surely this was instruction for them to keep watching because they didn’t know the hour.  But Jesus did know that day and the hour in which He would be crucified and raise from the dead. This was all accomplished according to the prophecies concerning Him. Jesus had even told them already of which day it would be that He would be crucified:

Mat_26:2  Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.

So by the very example, there was a day and hour when Jesus would be crucified and die on the cross and Jesus was here telling us this by these very events.  And when that day came the sheep scattered because they were not ready and not watching.

Let’s look at 1 Thessalonians:

1Th 5:1  But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
1Th 5:2  For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 
1Th 5:3  For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
1Th 5:4  But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. 

Now those that are prepared and not in darkness have no need of concern on that day.   Now there  are no indications that one must know the day or the hour in order to be saved.

Do we even have indications in the Bible that God is concerned with us knowing the “TIME” of events?  We do:

Luk_19:44  And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

Now we come to what many think are the verses that settle the question:

Act 1:6  When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 
Act 1:7  And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 
Act 1:8  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 

But let’s analyze what the first two verses above show. They show that the times and the seasons are in the Father’s power.  Now notice verse 8, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you”…  So notice that they will receive power from the Holy Ghost.  The Holy Ghost is the very Spirit of the Father Himself.  So after they had received that Power they could know times and seasons.  So while many opponents cite these verses, they are actually a proof that we can know know the day and hour of the return of our Lord Jesus.

It is truly wonderful that God doesn’t withhold anything from those that love Him.  We can know the day and hour of Jesus’ return.  We should prepare and seek out that day with all earnest. God bless those whom He will find prepared which sought out the visitation of His Son coming in the Glory of His Kingdom.
